January 28, 2006 (ACCRA, GHANA, WEST AFRICA) -
E-learning for kids, a global nonprofit foundation that provides
free online learning for children 5 – 12,
today announced its partnership with e-toys & more Ltd.,
a leading distributor of award winning children’s interactive
educational product in Ghana. The partnership includes the
establishment of the Ghana chapter of e-learning for kids and
the distribution of the foundations courseware on CDs for free
and unlimited use to schools in Ghana. The announcement was
made today at an educators’ Summits attended by 200 heads
of schools in the Accra region by e-toys & more.
One-third of Ghana’s population of 22 million spread
across 10 regions is under the age of 14. Computers and infrastructure
are in short supply; many older people have never seen a PC.
E-toys have been leaders in the educational community, working
closely with the Ghana Education Service and the ministry of
Education and providing PCs and computer support to a number
of schools in Accra.
e-learning for Kids is providing more than a dozen of its
e-learning courses in Math, Science, Reading and Computers
on CDs, which will be distributed for free and unlimited use
in the region’s schools. “Our mission is to reach
as many children as possible with free e-learning to help them
build the essential skills for success in life,” said
Nick Van Dam, PhD., founder for e-learning for Kids and chief
leaning officer of Deloitte and Touche Tohmatsu. “Internet
Access should not be the limiting factor, especially in a part
of the world where childhood education is urgently needed.
We are honoured that e-toys & more can drive our efforts
here.”
In addition, Mrs. Theresa Sackey – Executive Vice President
of e-toys & more will head the Ghana chapter of e-learning
for kids. The foundation is creating regional and country chapters
around the world to enable more direct outreach to educators,
parents and children. A chapter based in Argentina was established
for Latin America on October of 2005; others will launch throughout
2006.
”Our involvement with e-learning for Kids is an exciting
extension of our commitment to prepare today’s children
for success as tomorrow’s adults,” said George
